FG Wilson

The Current Generation

FG Wilson (Engineering) Ltd is a world leader in the design and manufacture of high quality diesel generating sets, covering a comprehensive range from 6 kVA to 2,200 kVA and custom designed units up to 6,500 kVA. This represents anything from small generators for standby domestic use, up to complete power stations supplying electricity for national grids. The company, owned by the US giant Caterpillar Inc, is the largest diesel generator manufacturer in Europe, and the third largest in the world. In today's world, electricity has moved from being a luxury to being a basic requirement, even in lesser-developed countries. We supply power for organisations as diverse as hospitals to factories operating through black-outs. The FG Wilson Products are helping to make progress possible throughout the world...

Powerful Beginnings

FG Wilson was established in 1966 in an old textile mill in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In the early '70s the company started to focus on the design and manufacture of diesel powered generating sets, and since then they have experienced some spectacular growth. A small, family-run general engineering firm has grown into a large, internationally renowned exporter with 10 subsidiaries and a dealer network spanning 170 countries worldwide. Nowadays, the plants boast state of the art facilities and are among the most advanced in the world. Since 1993, the Group Headquarters has been located at a 770,000 square feet assembly plant in Larne, Northern Ireland, and ships in excess of 30,000 generating sets per year. This high export volume is supported by two additional plants in Northern Ireland with extensive facilities for metal fabrication and the manufacture of control systems. In 1994, the company became part of the multinational Emerson Electric Group, based in St Louis, Missouri, one of the world's largest electrical and electronics companies. This investment sparked further American interest in June 1996, in the form of a $225m joint venture between Emerson and the US giant Caterpillar Inc, under which FG Wilson was to assemble most of Caterpillar's generating set range. This was to set the pace for FG Wilson to become the world's largest generating set manufacturer. More recently - in June 1999 - Caterpillar acquired 100% equity in FG Wilson. Caterpillar boasted sales of US$ 21bn last year, with engines and generating sets accounting for over 20% of turnover. FG Wilson is now an integral part of the Caterpillar family of companies which, as a group, is the world's leading provider of diesel generating sets. In fact, the acquisition consolidates FG Wilson, Northern Ireland as the principal manufacturing plant for Caterpillar generating sets sold outside the US. FG Wilson generating sets are widely used by industry and commerce for standby and emergency power, enabling essential functions to continue and helping our customers to succeed in their businesses. In many parts of the developing world our generating sets are the only source of reliable electricity. We give power to those who would otherwise go without, improving the quality of life in many of the least developed and most inhospitable regions in the world.
